.NET 6 LTS EOL Nov 12, 2024 – Plan Now (51 chars)

Updated 3rd Party Support Team

If your organization runs applications on Microsoft .NET 6 (LTS), you have until November 12, 2024 before the platform reaches end of life. That is roughly six months from today. While that deadline may seem far off, the window for a comfortable migration is shrinking fast. Procurement cycles, internal change freezes, regression testing, and rollout windows can eat up most of that time. Procrastinating now could force a rushed migration – or leave you running an unsupported runtime with no vendor-supplied security patches or bug fixes.

A Realistic Migration Timeline Worked Backwards from November 12, 2024

To migrate safely by November 12, 2024, most teams need to start now. Here is a typical timeline worked back from the end-of-life date:

  • Now – 2 months (September): Finalize migration plan, inventory all .NET 6 applications, and begin code changes. If you have not kicked off discovery yet, you are already behind.
  • September – October: Complete development and unit testing. This is the most labor-intensive phase – expect surprises in dependency compatibility and breaking changes if you are moving to .NET 8 or a newer LTS release.
  • Mid-October: Start user acceptance testing and performance validation. Many organizations hit unexpected regressions here.
  • Late October – Early November: Freeze changes for holiday season (November is often a blackout period for many enterprises) or final deployment window. Any unplanned delays push you past the deadline.

Note that the latest version in the .NET 6 line is 6.0.36, which includes all cumulative patches. If you cannot upgrade the runtime itself, at minimum ensure you are on 6.0.36 before November 12.

Risks of Running .NET 6 After End of Life

On November 12, 2024, Microsoft will cease issuing security patches, bug fixes, and technical support for .NET 6. This is a long-term support (LTS) release, so the support period was always fixed. After that date:

  • No security updates: Any newly discovered vulnerabilities in the .NET runtime or its libraries will go unpatched by the vendor. Attackers actively scan for EOL platforms.
  • No bug fixes: Critical performance or stability issues that arise post-EOL will have no official resolution.
  • Compliance and audit issues: Standards like PCI DSS, SOC 2, and internal security policies often require running supported software. A .NET 6 application past end of life could trigger audit findings.
  • Third-party dependency gaps: Many NuGet packages and commercial libraries eventually drop support for EOL runtimes, creating a cascading risk.

How Third-Party Support Removes the Deadline Pressure

If your migration cannot complete by November 12 – or if you prefer to stay on .NET 6 for operational or cost reasons – third-party maintenance keeps your environment safe and compliant without forcing a rushed move. By locking in a support contract now, you gain:

  • Continued security patches for critical CVEs after Microsoft stops issuing them.
  • Technical support for .NET 6 runtime and framework issues.
  • No deadline panic – your team can migrate on its own schedule (or decide not to migrate at all).

Third-party support from providers like 3rd Party Support gives you a bridge that eliminates the November 12 gunpoint deadline. You get the protection of ongoing patches plus the flexibility to plan a migration when it makes sense for your business – not when the calendar says so.

Next Steps

Your first move should be to determine whether your .NET 6 applications can be migrated before November 12, 2024. If the timeline is tight (and for most enterprises with multiple apps, it is), evaluate a third-party support agreement as a safety net. The window is closing – start planning today.

How we can help

Keep it running after end of support

Hardware or software, the end-of-support date doesn’t have to force a refresh. We keep enterprise infrastructure maintained, secure and under SLA long after the vendor moves on — typically at 40-70% below OEM pricing.

End-of-life support →

Migration services

When you do decide to move, we plan and execute the migration. Your current environment stays under vendor support while your contract is active — and if the renewal lapses mid-move, our third-party support covers most issues until the last workload is off it.

24×7 remote administration

Short on hands to run it day to day? Our NOC engineers monitor, patch and administer your environment around the clock — incident response included, at a fraction of the cost of an in-house night shift.
