Microsoft .NET 7 EOL: May 14, 2024 Deadline

Updated 3rd Party Support Team

The May 14, 2024 Deadline

Microsoft .NET 7 is not a Long-Term Support (LTS) release. As a Standard Term Support release, its lifecycle is strictly limited, and it reaches both end of active support and end of life on May 14, 2024. The latest version in this line is 7.0.20, and per the official lifecycle timeline, no further updates will be issued after the cutoff date.

When the May 14 deadline passes, Microsoft will cease providing security patches, bug fixes, and technical support SLAs for .NET 7. Continuing to run unsupported runtimes exposes your infrastructure to unpatched vulnerabilities and compliance violations.

A Realistic Post-Deadline Strategy

With the EOL date approaching rapidly, executing a full migration to an LTS release like .NET 8 across your entire estate may no longer be realistic. Instead, IT and infrastructure managers must shift focus to risk mitigation, isolation, and securing alternative support.

1. Inventory Affected Systems

Identify every application and service currently depending on the .NET 7 runtime. Distinguish between internal utility applications and public-facing services, as the latter carry significantly higher risk post-EOL.

2. Isolate and Harden

For workloads that cannot be migrated before May 14, apply strict network segmentation. Restrict outbound traffic from servers running .NET 7 and implement strict access controls to limit potential exploit vectors.

3. Document Exposure

Compliance auditors and cyber insurance providers require strict accounting of unsupported software. Document the business justification for retaining .NET 7 workloads, your mitigation controls, and your timeline for eventual migration.

4. Line Up Third-Party Support

Third-party maintenance provides a safety net when vendor support ends. Engaging a provider for your Microsoft software ensures you have expert assistance, custom workarounds, and operational support on day one after the EOL date, buying your team the time needed to safely complete migrations.

Week-by-Week Action Checklist

Use the remaining time to execute this structured plan:

  • Weeks 1-2: Discovery and Triage. Run automated discovery tools to build a comprehensive inventory of .NET 7 workloads. Categorize them by business criticality and migration complexity.
  • Weeks 3-6: Isolation Execution. Begin segmenting critical .NET 7 applications. Update firewall rules, deploy web application firewalls (WAFs) where applicable, and test the applications to ensure isolation measures do not break core functionality.
  • Weeks 7-10: Audit and Documentation. Finalize risk documentation. Brief compliance officers and IT leadership on the temporary retention of legacy systems and the controls in place.
  • Weeks 11-12: Contract Execution. Finalize your independent support agreements. Ensure your internal helpdesk and infrastructure teams have the correct routing procedures to contact your new support provider immediately if issues arise after May 14.

By taking these pragmatic steps now, you can maintain operational stability and security while planning a methodical migration on your own terms.

How we can help

Keep it running after end of support

Hardware or software, the end-of-support date doesn’t have to force a refresh. We keep enterprise infrastructure maintained, secure and under SLA long after the vendor moves on — typically at 40-70% below OEM pricing.

End-of-life support →

Migration services

When you do decide to move, we plan and execute the migration. Your current environment stays under vendor support while your contract is active — and if the renewal lapses mid-move, our third-party support covers most issues until the last workload is off it.

Migration & hybrid cloud services →

24×7 remote administration

Short on hands to run it day to day? Our NOC engineers monitor, patch and administer your environment around the clock — incident response included, at a fraction of the cost of an in-house night shift.
