.NET 9 EOL: Nov 10, 2026 – Six Months to Act

Updated 3rd Party Support Team

Microsoft .NET 9 is a non-LTS (Long Term Support) release, meaning its support lifecycle is shorter than the three-year window offered for LTS versions. According to the vendor's lifecycle policy, both active support and end of life coincide on November 10, 2026. The latest version in this line is 9.0.18.

If you are still running .NET 9, you now have roughly six months before Microsoft stops providing security patches, bug fixes, or technical assistance. While that may seem like ample time, the reality of enterprise IT procurement, change freezes, and testing cycles means the comfortable migration window is already closing.

The Reality of the Timeline

Working backwards from November 10, 2026:

  • Now – September 2026: Procurement and planning. If you need to upgrade to a supported .NET version (such as .NET 8 LTS or .NET 10 LTS), you must allocate budget, evaluate dependencies, and schedule the work. Many organizations also face summer and year-end change freezes that can block deployments.
  • September – October 2026: Migration and testing. Actual code changes, integration testing, and performance validation typically require several weeks, especially for applications with complex dependencies on .NET runtime features.
  • November 1 – November 10, 2026: Final cut-over and monitoring. Any delay in earlier phases pushes you past the deadline.

Given that most IT departments operate on a 30- to 90-day procurement cycle and need at least 4–6 weeks for testing, the time to act is now, not in September.

Risks of Running Unsupported After November 10, 2026

Once .NET 9 reaches end of life:

  • No security patches: Any vulnerabilities discovered in the runtime or base class libraries will remain unaddressed by Microsoft. This exposes your applications to potential exploits.
  • No bug fixes: Reliability issues may surface without any vendor-provided resolution.
  • Compliance and audit exposure: Many regulatory frameworks (PCI-DSS, HIPAA, SOX) require running supported software. An unsupported .NET 9 runtime can trigger audit findings.
  • Third-party dependencies: Libraries and tools often drop support for unsupported runtimes, creating a cascade of compatibility issues.

If your team cannot complete migration before November 10, these risks become immediate. But there is an alternative to rushing a migration or accepting the exposure.

How Third-Party Support Removes the Pressure

Third-party maintenance providers specialize in extending the safe, supported life of software after the vendor's end-of-life date. By locking in a third-party support contract for .NET 9 now, you gain:

  • Continued security patches: Independent security engineering teams can backport fixes for critical vulnerabilities, keeping your runtime protected.
  • Technical support: Access to engineers who understand the .NET ecosystem can help troubleshoot runtime issues that arise post-EOL.
  • Migration timing flexibility: You are no longer racing against a hard deadline. You can plan and execute migration at a pace that fits your team's capacity, budget, and business priorities — or even decide to stay on .NET 9 if it meets your needs.

Crucially, engaging third-party support before the EOL date avoids any gap in coverage. You have a seamless transition from official support to extended support, with no window of vulnerability.

A Practical Path Forward

If .NET 9 is in your environment, take these steps this quarter:

  1. Inventory all .NET 9 workloads — identify every application and dependency.
  2. Evaluate migration feasibility — test your code against .NET 8 LTS or .NET 10 (when available). Determine if migration is straightforward or requires substantial rework.
  3. Assess the cost of a rushed migration — compare the effort, risk, and potential downtime of an accelerated upgrade against the cost of a third-party support contract.
  4. Contact us to discuss third-party support options — locking in coverage now removes deadline pressure and lets your team migrate (or not) on its own schedule.

How we can help

Keep it running after end of support

Hardware or software, the end-of-support date doesn’t have to force a refresh. We keep enterprise infrastructure maintained, secure and under SLA long after the vendor moves on — typically at 40-70% below OEM pricing.

End-of-life support →

Migration services

When you do decide to move, we plan and execute the migration. Your current environment stays under vendor support while your contract is active — and if the renewal lapses mid-move, our third-party support covers most issues until the last workload is off it.

Migration & hybrid cloud services →

24×7 remote administration

Short on hands to run it day to day? Our NOC engineers monitor, patch and administer your environment around the clock — incident response included, at a fraction of the cost of an in-house night shift.
