Oracle JDK 17 (LTS) End of Life: September 30, 2026

Updated 3rd Party Support Team

Why the Deadline Matters

Oracle JDK 17 (LTS) is scheduled to reach its end of life on September 30, 2026. With roughly six months remaining, the window for a comfortable migration is closing fast. This release – the latest Long Term Support (LTS) version in the 17 series (currently at 17.0.20) – will receive no further public patches or updates from Oracle after that date.

For IT directors and infrastructure managers, the decision deadline is not September 30 – it is much earlier. Procurement cycles, change freezes, testing, and staged rollouts eat up the majority of those six months. A realistic timeline worked backwards shows why action today prevents a scramble later.

Realistic Migration Timeline

  • Month 1–2 (now): Assessment and planning. Identify all environments running Oracle JDK 17, inventory dependencies (libraries, frameworks, custom code), and determine the target runtime (e.g., OpenJDK builds, Oracle JDK 21 LTS, or a third-party support agreement).
  • Month 3–4: Internal testing. Run regression, performance, and security tests on a non-production JDK 17 build. Factor in change freezes (common in Q4 or year-end) that may block deployments.
  • Month 5: Staged rollouts. Deploy to a subset of production nodes, monitor for issues, and gather feedback.
  • Month 6: Complete migration for all critical workloads – or secure an extension via a support contract.

If your organization has not started this process, the September 30 deadline becomes a hard stop – and the margin for error is near zero.

Risks of Running Past EOL Without Support

Continuing to use Oracle JDK 17 on production systems after the end-of-life date exposes your organization to:

  • No security patches: New CVEs targeting Java runtimes will not be addressed by Oracle. Without a support contract, your environment becomes an increasingly attractive target.
  • Compliance gaps: Audits (PCI DSS, SOC 2, internal policies) often require patched, supported software. Running an unsupported JDK may fail compliance checks.
  • Vendor lock‑in renewal: Returning to Oracle for a support contract after EOL can be costly or require upgrading to a newer, potentially incompatible version.
  • Unplanned downtime: Bugs and regressions discovered after EOL will not have vendor fixes – your team must diagnose and patch in-house.

How Third-Party Support Takes the Pressure Off

Third-party maintenance for Oracle JDK 17 allows you to keep using your current Java runtime safely past September 30, 2026. Instead of a forced migration, you gain:

  • Continued security patches: Custom backported fixes for critical vulnerabilities, tailored to JDK 17.
  • Extended lifecycle: Run on your own schedule – migrate to JDK 21 or another LTS release when it makes sense for your business, not when a vendor deadline expires.
  • Removal of deadline pressure: Procurement and testing can proceed at a natural pace. Change freezes, holiday schedules, and resource constraints no longer dictate your Java roadmap.

By locking in third-party support now, you eliminate the risk of running unsupported and turn an urgent migration into an optional, well-planned upgrade – or no upgrade at all.

Next Steps

If your organization relies on Oracle JDK 17 in production, review your entitlement status today. The September 30, 2026 end-of-life date is fixed; your options are not. Start by evaluating your current JDK 17 deployments and contacting us to discuss how third-party support can keep your runtime secure on your own timeline.

How we can help

Keep it supported after end of life

The vendor's date doesn't have to be yours. Our engineers keep Oracle JDK 17 (LTS) running after official support ends — independent third-party support that covers most operational issues, typically at 40-70% below the last renewal quote.

Migration services

When you do decide to move, we plan and execute the migration. Your current environment stays under vendor support while your contract is active — and if the renewal lapses mid-move, our third-party support covers most issues until the last workload is off it.

24×7 remote administration

Short on hands to run it day to day? Our NOC engineers monitor, patch and administer your environment around the clock — incident response included, at a fraction of the cost of an in-house night shift.
