Oracle JDK 24 EOL Sept 16, 2025 – Migrate or Extend Support

Updated 3rd Party Support Team

The September 16, 2025 Deadline Is Closer Than It Looks

Oracle JDK 24 will reach end of life (EOL) on September 16, 2025. Because this is not a long-term support (LTS) release, both active support and all public updates end on that date. The latest version in the line is 24.0.2, but no further patches or security fixes will be issued after EOL.

Six months may sound like enough time, but for most IT organizations the window for a comfortable migration is already narrowing. Procurement cycles, vendor approval, change freezes, testing, and staging consume far more calendar time than the actual code changes. Here is a realistic look at what needs to happen — and how third-party support can turn a deadline into a choice.

A Realistic Migration Timeline Worked Backwards from September 16

To complete a migration before the EOL date, each phase must be scheduled carefully. Assuming a typical enterprise environment, the months break down as follows:

  • Now – July 2025 (weeks 1–8): Assessment and approval. Identify all applications running on Oracle JDK 24, confirm they can run on a newer LTS JDK (e.g., 21 or 17), and get budget/sign-off for the migration project.
  • July – August 2025 (weeks 9–16): Testing and staging. Set up a representative test environment, run regression and performance tests, and address any compatibility issues. This stage often reveals unexpected library or framework dependencies.
  • August – September 2025 (weeks 17–20): Final deployment and rollback plan. Conduct pilot deployments, validate in production under load, and document rollback procedures. A two-week change freeze in many organizations can compress this window further.
  • September 16, 2025: EOL deadline. If migration isn’t complete, you are running an unsupported JDK.

If your organization has a typical August change freeze, the effective testing window is cut by at least four weeks, pushing the go/no-go decision into mid-July. That leaves roughly four months for initial planning.

The Risks of Running Past End of Life with No Support

After September 16, 2025, Oracle JDK 24 will receive no security patches, bug fixes, or technical support from Oracle unless you have a paid support contract. For many organizations that is not an option because Oracle’s support for non-LTS releases is limited to the active release period. The consequences of staying on an unsupported JDK include:

  • Unpatched vulnerabilities: New CVEs discovered in the JDK after EOL will remain exploitable. Compliance frameworks (PCI-DSS, SOC 2, HIPAA) generally require active patching.
  • No bug fixes: Any runtime defects that surface cannot be resolved by the vendor, potentially causing application instability or data corruption.
  • Vendor audit risk: If your software licensing agreement requires you to use supported software, running past EOL may trigger non-compliance penalties.
  • Potential security gaps: Without updates, your JDK becomes a growing attack surface, especially if exposed to external networks.

How Third-Party Support Removes the Deadline Pressure

Third-party maintenance for Oracle JDK allows you to keep running JDK 24 safely past September 16, 2025. A provider like 3rd Party Support can deliver critical patches, security fixes, and technical assistance for the version you already have — without forcing you onto a new JDK release.

This approach offers two key advantages:

  1. Extend your migration schedule. If you cannot complete testing by September, you can maintain the old JDK under third-party support while continuing to work on the migration at your own pace. No more rushing to meet an artificial date.

  2. Decide whether to migrate at all. For stable internal applications that are unlikely to be updated again, staying on a supported old JDK can be more cost-effective than retesting everything on a newer LTS release. Third-party support gives you that permanent option.

By locking in support now — before the EOL deadline — you eliminate the risk of running unsupported even for a day. The contract is in place, patches keep flowing, and your team can plan the migration (or stay-put) without panic.

Next Steps

With only six months until Oracle JDK 24 reaches end of life, the decisions you make this quarter will determine whether your organization hits the deadline safely or scrambles come September. Evaluate your current JDK inventory, identify the migration blockers, and consider whether third-party support could relieve the pressure.

How we can help

Keep it supported after end of life

The vendor's date doesn't have to be yours. Our engineers keep Oracle JDK 24 running after official support ends — independent third-party support that covers most operational issues, typically at 40-70% below the last renewal quote.

Oracle OS software support →

Migration services

When you do decide to move, we plan and execute the migration. Your current environment stays under vendor support while your contract is active — and if the renewal lapses mid-move, our third-party support covers most issues until the last workload is off it.

Migration & hybrid cloud services →

24×7 remote administration

Short on hands to run it day to day? Our NOC engineers monitor, patch and administer your environment around the clock — incident response included, at a fraction of the cost of an in-house night shift.
