Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Reaches End of Life May 31, 2025 — Act Now

Updated 3rd Party Support Team

Six Months Until Ubuntu 20.04 LTS End of Life — Your Migration Window Is Smaller Than You Think

As of this writing, you have roughly six months before Ubuntu 20.04 ‘Focal Fossa’ (LTS) reaches its end of life on May 31, 2025. That sounds like a lot of runway. It is not.

Between now and then, you need to fit in procurement cycles, change freezes, testing windows, and deployment across your estate. If you are running an on-premises or hybrid environment, six months evaporates fast.

A Realistic Migration Timeline Worked Backwards from May 31, 2025

Here is what a typical migration to Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04 LTS looks like when you start from today:

  • Now – April 2025: Inventory all Ubuntu 20.04 machines. Identify which workloads can move immediately and which need compatibility testing. This step alone can take 4–6 weeks.
  • April – May 2025: Conduct regression testing on applications, databases, and tooling. If you rely on third-party packages or custom repos, add another 2–3 weeks.
  • May 1–20, 2025: Execute the migration. Any change freeze between late May and early June (common for quarterly reporting cycles) blows this timeline.
  • May 21–31, 2025: Buffer for rollback or issues. Not enough time for a second pass.

If your next change freeze hits before April 2025, you are already behind.

What Happens After May 31, 2025?

After the end of life date, Canonical stops publishing:

  • Security patches
  • Bug fixes
  • Kernel livepatch updates
  • Software repository updates for the 20.04 repositories

Running an unsupported LTS release in production means:

  • New vulnerabilities are discovered and left unpatched
  • Compliance audits (SOC 2, ISO 27001, PCI DSS) will flag the OS as out-of-life
  • You carry full liability for any breach or data loss

There is no grace period. The repos are taken down on the date published. You cannot “extend” the software itself without a separate support agreement.

Third-Party Support Removes the Deadline Pressure

If you cannot migrate all workloads by May 31, you are not alone. Many IT teams are still running Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04 in isolated environments. The alternative to a rushed, error-prone migration is third-party support.

With a third-party support agreement in place:

  • The deadline disappears. You can keep Ubuntu 20.04 in production past May 2025 while you plan the move at a comfortable pace.
  • Security coverage continues. Patches for critical and high-severity CVEs are backported and delivered on your schedule.
  • No compliance gap. A signed support agreement satisfies auditors that the OS is still under maintenance.
  • You may decide not to migrate at all. If the workload is stable and isolated, there is no business case to touch it.

Locking in third-party support now means you skip the panic window entirely. Your team migrates (or does not migrate) on your own timeline, not Canonical’s.

What to Do in the Next 30 Days

  1. Run an inventory. Know exactly how many instances and which applications depend on Ubuntu 20.04.
  2. Assess migration effort. Categorize workloads as “easy,” “hard,” or “frozen” (locked by vendor requirements or legacy dependencies).
  3. Decide on a support path. For the hard and frozen categories, contact us to discuss a third-party support plan before April 2025.

Ubuntu 20.04 is a solid, well-tested LTS release. You should not have to rip it out under pressure. Third-party support gives you the flexibility to keep it running safely — on your terms.

How we can help

Keep it supported after end of life

The vendor's date doesn't have to be yours. Our engineers keep Ubuntu 20.04 'Focal Fossa' (LTS) running after official support ends — independent third-party support that covers most operational issues, typically at 40-70% below the last renewal quote.

Ubuntu software support →

Migration services

When you do decide to move, we plan and execute the migration. Your current environment stays under vendor support while your contract is active — and if the renewal lapses mid-move, our third-party support covers most issues until the last workload is off it.

24×7 remote administration

Short on hands to run it day to day? Our NOC engineers monitor, patch and administer your environment around the clock — incident response included, at a fraction of the cost of an in-house night shift.
