Ubuntu 23.10 EOL July 12, 2024: Your Options
Ubuntu 23.10 Reaches End of Life
Ubuntu 23.10 ('Mantic Minotaur') is an interim release, meaning it does not carry Long Term Support (LTS) status. Canonical provides a strict nine months of standard support for these releases. According to published Ubuntu lifecycle timelines, end of active support and end of life (EOL) for version 23.10 will occur on July 12, 2024.
With nine months remaining, infrastructure managers have adequate time to evaluate and execute a transition plan. There are generally three paths forward for workloads running on aging operating systems: migrate and upgrade, secure vendor extensions, or transition to third-party support.
Assessing Your Options
1. Migrate and Upgrade
The standard path for non-LTS Ubuntu deployments is to upgrade to the next release. In this case, workloads currently on 23.10 will typically be targeted for upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS once it becomes available.
- Suitability: Best for platforms under active development that require the latest kernel features, drivers, and package versions.
- Risk Profile: Medium to High. Upgrading the base operating system can introduce compatibility issues with existing applications, requiring extensive regression testing.
- Cost & Timeline: Requires significant planning, testing, and deployment resources over the next nine months.
2. Vendor Extended Support
Canonical offers Ubuntu Pro (formerly Expanded Security Maintenance or ESM) to extend the lifecycle of certain releases with ongoing security updates.
- Suitability: Designed for enterprise environments that need more time to migrate.
- Risk Profile: Low risk, as patches are built and distributed directly by the vendor.
- Cost & Timeline: Canonical typically restricts extended support offerings to LTS releases (e.g., 20.04, 22.04). Because 23.10 is an interim release, standard vendor extensions are generally not applicable, making this path a non-starter for most deployments unless custom enterprise agreements are negotiated.
3. Third-Party Support
If you have stable, legacy, or frozen workloads running on 23.10 that cannot be disrupted by an OS upgrade, third-party maintenance is a highly effective alternative. Third-party support providers can deliver critical security patches, backports, and operational assistance long past the vendor's official EOL date.
- Suitability: Ideal for stable environments, isolated systems, or applications that are certified only for the specific 23.10 OS configuration.
- Risk Profile: Low risk for application stability. The underlying OS remains structurally untouched, preventing compatibility breaks while still receiving necessary security mitigation.
- Cost & Timeline: Implementation is generally rapid. It shifts the financial model from high internal operational costs (the labor of testing and upgrading) to a predictable, often lower, maintenance expense.
Decision Checklist
To determine the best path for your Ubuntu 23.10 deployments before July 12, 2024, review the following:
- Workload Status: Is the application actively being developed, or is it in maintenance mode?
- Upgrade Feasibility: Do you have the internal engineering resources and budget to fully test and execute an OS upgrade before July?
- Application Compatibility: Are your dependent applications and third-party tools certified for the upcoming Ubuntu 24.04 LTS release?
- Security and Compliance: Does your regulatory framework mandate active security patching, prohibiting you from simply running an unsupported OS?
If upgrading is not feasible for your infrastructure timeline, contact us to learn how third-party support can keep your Ubuntu workloads running securely and reliably beyond the July 2024 deadline.

How we can help
Keep it supported after end of life
The vendor's date doesn't have to be yours. Our engineers keep Ubuntu 23.10 'Mantic Minotaur' running after official support ends — independent third-party support that covers most operational issues, typically at 40-70% below the last renewal quote.
Ubuntu software support →Migration services
When you do decide to move, we plan and execute the migration. Your current environment stays under vendor support while your contract is active — and if the renewal lapses mid-move, our third-party support covers most issues until the last workload is off it.
Migration & hybrid cloud services →24×7 remote administration
Short on hands to run it day to day? Our NOC engineers monitor, patch and administer your environment around the clock — incident response included, at a fraction of the cost of an in-house night shift.
