Updated 3rd Party Support Team

The October 11, 2025 Deadline Is Closer Than It Looks

VMware Site Recovery Manager 8.8 reaches end of life on October 11, 2025. That is roughly three months from now. This is not an LTS release, and the latest build in the line is version 8.8.0.3. After October 11, Broadcom will no longer provide patches, security fixes, bug updates, or vendor support SLAs for SRM 8.8.

For most estates, a complete migration to a supported version before that date is no longer realistic. The window is too tight for planning, testing, and cutover — especially if your environment spans multiple sites or has complex replication configurations.

This article provides a realistic action plan for the remaining weeks: what changes on the EOL date, where to focus your limited time, and how to ensure your disaster recovery environment stays safe and compliant after support ends.

What Changes on October 11, 2025

On the EOL date, the following happens:

  • No more security patches – Any vulnerabilities discovered after October 11 will not be fixed by the vendor.
  • No more bug fixes – Software defects go unaddressed.
  • No vendor support – You cannot open support tickets, and vendor SLAs for response and resolution expire.
  • No compliance coverage – Auditors and insurers may flag unsupported software as a risk, potentially affecting certifications or premiums.

SRM 8.8 will continue to function as long as your infrastructure remains stable. But you lose all protection against future issues — technical, security, and contractual.

Why a Full Upgrade Is Unrealistic in Three Months

VMware Site Recovery Manager is tightly coupled with vCenter Server and underlying storage replication. Upgrading to a newer release (e.g., SRM 9.x) often requires:

  • Compatibility checks against your vSphere version
  • Coordinated upgrades of vCenter, ESXi, and array-based replication adapters
  • Recertification of recovery plans
  • Multiple test failovers across production and DR sites

Three months is rarely sufficient for a safe, audited upgrade in a mid-to-large enterprise. Rushing invites cutover failures and extended downtime.

A Week-by-Week Action Checklist

The goal is not to complete a migration before October 11. Instead, use the time to reduce risk and prepare for the post-EOL period.

Weeks 1–2: Inventory and Assess

  • Identify every SRM 8.8 instance in your environment, including version and build (check for 8.8.0.3).
  • Map each instance to its associated vCenter, replication appliance, and storage arrays.
  • Note which recovery plans are critical, which are test-only, and which may already be obsolete.

Weeks 3–4: Isolate and Harden

  • Ensure SRM servers and related VMs are on a restricted management network with minimal internet exposure.
  • Apply the latest available patches (8.8.0.3) now — this is your last chance for vendor fixes.
  • Review and tighten firewall rules, service accounts, and role-based access for SRM components.

Weeks 5–6: Document Exposure for Auditors and Insurers

  • Prepare a statement of fact for compliance teams: list all SRM 8.8 systems, their EOL date, and the mitigation measures in place (hardening, isolation, third-party support plans).
  • Contact your insurer to understand whether unsupported DR software affects your policy terms.
  • Begin an internal risk register entry for unsupported SRM 8.8.

Weeks 7–8: Evaluate Your Options

  • Determine whether a jump upgrade to SRM 9.x is feasible after EOL (some vendors support non-current releases with third-party maintenance).
  • Assess third-party support providers that cover VMware products. Confirm they can support SRM 8.8 past October 11.
  • Budget for ongoing support — a third-party contract is typically a fraction of the cost of a rushed migration.

Weeks 9–10: Test and Validate

  • Run a full recovery plan test (non-production or scheduled window) to confirm current SRM 8.8 is stable.
  • Document any failures or anomalies. These will be your baseline for post-EOL troubleshooting.
  • Ensure backup and replication configurations are current and independent of SRM version dependencies.

Weeks 11–12: Finalise Support Coverage and Audit Trail

  • Sign a third-party support contract effective October 12, 2025 (day one after EOL).
  • Confirm the provider can handle critical issues and has access to SRM 8.8 patches or workarounds.
  • Archive a complete snapshot of your SRM configuration, recovery plans, and network topology for future reference.
  • Notify internal audit and security teams that post-EOL support is in place.

Securing Day-One Support After EOL

Once SRM 8.8 leaves vendor support, your only way to maintain SLAs for critical issues is through a third-party maintenance provider. These providers can offer:

  • Break-fix support for software defects
  • Security advisory monitoring and workarounds
  • Access to a pool of certified VMware engineers familiar with SRM 8.x
  • Assistance with eventual migration planning

This approach buys you time — often 12 to 24 months — to plan a proper, low-risk upgrade without the artificial deadline pressure.

How we can help

Keep it supported after end of life

The vendor's date doesn't have to be yours. Our engineers keep VMware Site Recovery Manager 8.8 running after official support ends — independent third-party support that covers most operational issues, typically at 40-70% below the last renewal quote.

Migration services

When you do decide to move, we plan and execute the migration. Your current environment stays under vendor support while your contract is active — and if the renewal lapses mid-move, our third-party support covers most issues until the last workload is off it.

Migration & hybrid cloud services →

24×7 remote administration

Short on hands to run it day to day? Our NOC engineers monitor, patch and administer your environment around the clock — incident response included, at a fraction of the cost of an in-house night shift.
