Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 (LTSC) officially reached its end of life (EOL) on October 10, 2023. For IT infrastructure managers and directors, this date marked the conclusion of a ten-year lifecycle for one of the most widely deployed enterprise server operating systems.
Active support for this long-term support (LTS) release ended on October 9, 2018. Following the October 10, 2023 milestone, the system no longer receives regular security updates or technical support from Microsoft. The final build in this release line is version 6.3.9600.
What End of Life Means in Practice
When Windows Server 2012 R2 reaches end of life, the operating system does not stop functioning. Your servers, virtual machines, and hosted applications will continue to run exactly as they did before the EOL date.
However, what does stop is the vendor ecosystem surrounding the product:
